In 1996, the Eurotunnel Shuttle caught fire which spread throughout its carriages. Fire officers had issued a prior warning that the open-sided design of the carriages may prove dangerous. But poor management resulted in 34 people being entrapped for six hours, as 450 firefighters battled with
dense toxic smoke to save their lives.
